How Agile Is Your Company The workload of any project manager is rather heavy, but this is particularly so in the IT industry, where dynamic decision making and innovation is critical to product development. This makes the traditional “Waterfall” project management style unsuitable for such an environment. So how can IT project managers or team leaders effectively manage company priorities, work methods and employees with the dynamic required for success? It has been called the best kept secret in management today: Agile. The Agile Approach, also known as Scrum, involves horizontal collaboration across IT teams, with a focus on continuous innovation and adding value directly to the customer. As described by Idealist Consulting, Agile project management follows a project structure of design, tweak, repeat, launch, and improve. It “allows for the freedom to make changes as necessary, without the shackles of an outdated document” (Idealist Consulting). Those that can credit a large part of their success to the Agile Approach include ground-breaking companies such as Google, Salesforce, Apple, and Spotify. According to Forbes, in 2006, the Salesforce leadership team came to realise their innovation was coming to a halt, with just one product release that year. In its previous five years, they were delivering an average of four major releases each year. Since the change, Salesforce has seen spectacular results. Developer Mike Cohn reports, “During the first year of making the switch, Salesforce.com released 94 percent more features, delivered 38 percent more features per developer, and delivered over 500 percent more value to their customers compared to the previous year … Fifteen months after adopting Scrum, Salesforce.com surveyed its employees and found that 86 percent were having a ‘good time’ or the ‘best time’ working at the company. Prior to adopting Scrum, only 40 percent said the same thing. Further, 92 percent of employees said they would recommend an agile approach to others.” In particular, the agile method helps businesses to thrive where innovation and speedy go-to-market strategies are critical competitive differences. Companies like Salesforce have employed this method and subsequently created high performance teams and a growing enterprise. What Does an Agile Organisation Look Like? Users are actively involved in solution development â€" product features are prioritised according to the needs of the customer and the market. Employees are self-organised â€" the workplace becomes more productive as employees are given the autonomy to work as they need to in order to deliver their best. Agile organisations are transparent â€" they create a culture of communication in which people collaborate and share. Projects become flexible and evolving â€" if requirements change, timescales are adjusted. The customer is central to the problem-solving process â€" there is a focus on creating customer value in the release of the end product. It is these five core elements that help create a sustainable competitive advantage for Agile companies, evidenced by the success of businesses such as Spotify, Google and Salesforce. In an ever-evolving technological world, companies that adapt Agile are found to be optimal for fast adoption in chaotic environments, they are more likely to meet customer needs, and â€" in turn â€" they see a large return on investment. Please, no more studies about getting women to the top I hate to dis Catalyst because they have provided great research to support women in the work place. But heres a bit from their most recent study: Most large U.S. companies have made scant progress in advancing womento leadership and top-paying positions over the past decade. DUH!!!! Its clear at this point that women are basically stuck on their climb up the corporate ladder. In general, climbing the corporate ladder to the top requires giving up your personal life in order to serve the corporation. And research has shown that if women are willing to give up having kids, (or at least have a stay-at-home husband,) they can climb as well as men. But really, why fight to get more women up a ladder that is basically dysfunctional? We should, instead, focus on helping men to get off the ladder. And then helping both men and women to get meaningful and rewarding work both outside and inside the home. The Third Path is a nonprofit that addresses these issues. It helps people redesign work to better accommodate family, community and other life passions. The interview I did with the founder, Jessica DeGroot , was truly inspiring and made me think about all the possibilities for being a social change leader with my own family. Another way to address the issues of creating meaningful work inside and outside the home is to go to court. No joke. Lisa Belkin reports in todays New York Times that a new category of discrimination suit being won is a suit in which plaintiffs claim discrimination at work because they are giving care at home. Mary Still, professor at University of California Hastings College of the Law, coined the term family responsibilities discrimination, and both men and women are winning their cases in this area: Hooray.

You may be surprised to know most resumes for executive positions are generally poorly done. However, that just gives you the opportunity to shine brightly when it comes to your resume! Your executive bio needs to stand out from the rest. Most importantly, it needs to be error-free and you need to avoid putting some things in it altogether. We’ve compiled a list of five common, but unnecessary, things people put in their executive resumes. Too Wordy As an executive, you likely have many accomplishments and all of them are important to you. However, if you put too much on your resume, recruiters may stop reading it and move on to the next one. The best executive resume writers will include two or three key points to highlight skills and then move on. Think concise. Ask yourself, “Does this need to be on here?” You don’t want to overwhelm recruiters on paper. Look at the job description and use a lot of the words they use to describe the job.
